At this price, this machine is a steal. It has the capability of a full-fledged computer and the convenience of an extremely portable laptop. At just over 5 lbs. it’s certainly heavier than a tablet, a Macbook Air or an ultrabook, but then again it has all the advantages of a “real” computer. Responsiveness is outstanding since Windows 7 is a great OS, certainly when compared to Vista. Even compared to Apple’s OS X, Windows 7 performs quite well, although it is of course much more “labor intensive”, which is another way of saying that it’s not quite as user friendly. On the plus side, it provides what is possibly the most widely used software platform in the world. All in all you can’t go wrong with this device if you are looking for something that provides heavy lifting computing power as compared to a tablet or even an ultrabook.

A couple of tweaks here and there but overall and awesome laptop., April 29, 2012

Before choosing this laptop I researched the other options in amazon and other websites and I believe this one has the best value for the price.

A few things to note on it’s favor:

- Did not come dead on arrival (DOA).
- Windows Installation was fast.
- Can run entertainment apps / casual and social gaming perfectly.
- I love the idea of being able to use different covers (I have not tried it yet).
- The trackpad’s surface is one of the best I have used so far.
- The battery holds it’s charge as described and intended.
- The internal speakers have great power, enough to watch a video in a medium-size living room without plugging other speakers.
- Wireless adapter is pretty strong, it can list-down wireless points that my desktop adapter can’t.

Some downsides:

- Comes with the already-known Bloatware, simply uninstall all those pesky useless programs/games/antivirus.
- After modifying the mouse / trackpad settings I got a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) STOP Error: 0x000009f – DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (This problem occurs because of a race condition between two bus resets.). However, after I updated Windows 7 everything seems to be in order now.
- It’s glossy, expect a lot of fingerprints on it.
- Multi-gesture trackpad feature doesn’t work 100%, it seems not to be so accurate.
- The Trackpad can get warm when running process-extensive software or features but not to a point it is uncomfortable.

I have yet to find anything that ruins my experience, reason why I scored the laptop a 5. I will update this review in case it’s necessary and let you know.

Basic Laptop with great features, April 15, 2012

Bought one of these a few weeks ago to use for a sports club I administer. Needed a simple machine to do basic tasks- e-mail, web browsing, word processor….and to run a sports meet software. Great machine for these basis tasks. Price point is super, cheaper than many tablets or even in some cases a cell phone, and much more capable. Tested WiFi in an area where most cell phones and computers have trouble with weak signal, and this works great. Runs cool, battery life even with the basic battery is good, and weight is light enough to make it easily used on a…laptop. HDMI output is great, I hooked this up to my projector with no issues. Connectivity options for USB, HDMI, eSATA great for this price range. Overall this is a great price on a premium brand laptop with super solid features.

Bargain Workhorse, May 26, 2011

I bought this laptop directly from dell Financial Services auction on ebay. I did not even know that they have it here on Amazon Marketplace too. Even though the description said manufacturer refurbished the laptop I received looked like new. It came with power adapter and a Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD and built in Intel PROSet Wireless Card. Absolutely no bloatware is included.

Now this may not be a top of the line machine but it is pretty adequate for home and school or even Small Home Office use. The neat part is that once you boot up the machine for the first time it would automatically install Windows XP after going through some preliminary steps. It even gives you option to enter setup and configure things but you are better off leaving the machine alone to do its thing and install windows XP or whichever operating system it is bundled with unless you’re techie. Once windows finishes installation you can pretty much install anything you want. I have so far installed Open Office, MS Office 2003, Firefox, Chrome, Avast Anti Virus, Trusteer Rapport security Software and many other productivity softwares and the machine boots up and runs smoothly.

It does not come with webcam so I installed Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and Microsoft Lifecam Cinema and either camera runs smoothly even on HD modes. I use Lifecam Cinema more often because it’s stand is perfect fit for D630 bezel as opposed to the Quickcam Pro 9000′s stand which tend to wobble.

I will advise you buy this laptop directly from Dell either here on Amazon Marketplace or on ebay where it is listed under Dell_Financial_Services. You will likely receive a laptop that will be like new but more importantly you will get 30 days warranty.

This laptop is of right price, size and specs: 14″ bright LCD, 2GB Ram, 80GB harddisk space and 2GHZ Intel Dual Core processor that is more than adequate for most home, school and or Small Home Office use. It is sturdy and sleek looking too.

There is one thing that Dell scrimped on here: the tiny single speaker that is barely audible! I use an external Frisby USB laptop Speakers. I also use headphone when I am on the road. It is worthy to note that this tiny speaker belies a powerful sound card that only becomes apparent when you put on a headphone.

NB: Don’t forget to switch on the wireless radio or you will not be able to use the wifi connection. The switch is on same side and next to the headphone jack. It is switched off by default. Once you switch it on it will detect a bunch of wifi hot spots including yours, if any. Select your SSID from the displayed options and enter your router’s WEP Key and you will be good to go. I have at&t 2WIRE Wireless Gateway and the WEP Key is the ten digit number directly below the serial number located on the side or bottom of the router depending on whether it is standing vertically or lying on it’s side. The built in wireless card is powerful. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who may be on budget but not willing to compromise on quality and performance.

When I received this, I was sorely disappointed. I have purchased refurbished D630s from other vendors before, and they look/function as new. This one looked very worn, with the keys on the keyboard showing a ton of wear, and the same with the trackpad. Then, when I turned it on, I noticed actual human hair behind the glass of the screen, along with a ton of dust. The LCD must have been replaced in a very dirty environment. I sent it back, but I still haven’t received my refund from Amazon. What a disappointment!

First one great! Second one not so great….., July 26, 2011

I bought two of these. The first one was in excellent condition, really impressive for a “refurb”. So when hubby murdered his laptop by spilling a drink into it, I thought this D630 would be the perfect replacement for him. When it arrived, we were both a bit disappointed. It functions correctly but has a loose lid/screen that can wobble and some sticking keys and generally looks quite used. He’s satisfied enough to keep it, partly because he doesn’t want to be without one for any length of time, and partly because we’ve had positive experiences with off-lease Dells in the past even if they have a wart or two.

My personal disappointment was that after receiving the first one, I expected the same level of quality from the second one because it was sold by Amazon — not a marketplace refurb seller where you can never be sure of what you’ll get until you open the box.

A Solid Successor to the Kindle Keyboard, November 14, 2011

For my review, I’m going to focus it on the differences between the previous Kindle Keyboard, Wi-Fi, 6″ E Ink Display – includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers (which I’ll refer to as the K3), and the Kindle Touch (KT)

USE – As far as the reading experience, I really like the touch compared to the physical buttons on the previous generation. At first I was worried that I would constantly be turning the page from accidentally touching the screen, but this didn’t become much of an issue. The screen is broken up into mapped sections, so if you touch the far left side that covers about 1″ of the left of the screen, it goes to the previous page. If you touch anywhere on the other 80% of the screen beside that, it goes forward. Touch the top 1″ margin, and it will bring up the menu. There is also a physical button on the bottom of the touch that serves as the Home button and will take you straight to the Home menu. The area where I found the touch most useful is the dictionary. Previously, if I wanted to look up the definition of a word, I had to use the clunky joystick to navigate through the text. If a word was at the very bottom at the end of the sentence, sometimes I’d usually just ignore it rather than go through the trouble of pressing that joystick 15 times. With the Touch, I can simply touch the word and hold it down for about 1.5 seconds (so it knows I’m not trying to turn the page) to access the dictionary, which is incredibly useful and time-saving. Underlining phrases and highlighting works almost the same way. You hold down the first word in the sentence, then after two-three seconds it will recognize what you are doing, and then you drag your finger across the rest. I never used to do this before but now I do it all the time. The Kindle Fire actually handles the dictionary search much better. Though this is probably one of the only things the Fire does better than the Touch as far as ebooks. When you swipe your finger across the page or drag it down to change, the page changes just like it did with the Kindle Keyboard, in that it draws the next page. So there is a very short flash. It does not seamlessly and fluidly switch like it does with an iPad or what you would expect if you scrolled your mouse down a web site. This doesn’t detract from it at all for me. There is a new X-Ray feature that you can click on to bring up more ideas and common features of the book, but it is apparently only available on select titles and none of my books had it so I couldn’t try it out. The Kindle Touch does not allow you to switch the display to landscape mode like the basic Kindle does. I have no idea why but I would be surprised if they did not resolve this in a future firmware update.

Form Factor – Even though the changes are fairly small, they feel significant. The KT is only .1″ less width, and a little over half an inch shorter than the K3, but after several hours of using it, I feel like I can hold it longer with one hand than with the K3. I think the main contributor to this is that this Kindle is one ounce lighter than the K3. This is a very noticeable difference from the K3. One ounce adds up after hours of holding it in front of you with one hand. I never had a real problem holding the previous version, but this one seems even easier.

Real Page Numbers – the K3 only displayed a percentage of the book completed or some weird “location” setting that I never understood. The KT displays the actual page number, regardless of what zoom setting you have it on. This is a big improvement for me, especially after I realized how difficult it is for them to be able to do this. This does not work on every book, but most of the popular books I have checked it with have it.

Book Lending – This is another huge improvement and just another reason to make the jump from regular books to a Kindle. You can finally lend your books to other people with Kindles. You can lend a book only once, and only for 14 days. I am okay with that because I understand the need to curb piracy. My only problem is that the book has to be eligible for this option and so far, most of the books in my collection aren’t.

Display – Same as before on the K3, with a few improvements. The short flash that you get when turning the page (although I never really notice it) while the Kindle loads up the next page, occurs less frequently. This makes the Touch feel a lot more like a real book. Even though the display is monochrome, the KT delivers very crisp black and white images, and renders photos and images very well. I have tried out the Kindle Fire as well, but I still prefer the Kindle Touch due to E-Ink, which I think looks much better than backlit text, especially since I like to read for 4-5 hours at a time. First Kindle: Chose Touch over the Keyboard, November 23, 2011

I’ve had my Touch for almost a day now, and it’s pretty awesome. I’m not a big reviewer, but I figured several people may be in a similar position as I was yesterday, so here we go…

I’m definitely an avid reader. Actually, as I type this, I have roughly 1000 books sitting on a wall of shelves behind me. E-readers have always intrigued me, but I’ve never felt like they were worth 9 or more; however, when the Kindle Fire was announced, I thought they had released the Kindle for me.

I watched video reviews, “hands-on” videos, read numerous reviews, etc. I was pretty sure that I wanted a Fire, but as I thought about it, I wasn’t convinced that the Fire really provided me with access to anything that I couldn’t do on my phone (HTC Inspire 4g). Other than a bigger screen, the Fire was actually pretty limited (for my purposes). I mean, I would only be able to use the browser and watch videos in areas with WiFi (i.e. at home, at work, or at retail location with WiFi). If I’m at home, I’ll probably just watch videos on my tv and access the internet on my desktop or my laptop. At work I’m too busy for the Fire to get much use. And other than the occasional trip to Starbucks (and by occasional, I mean like once a month), I don’t really make use of hot spots.

SOO…I decided the Fire didn’t really justify the extra money for something I already have access to through my phone, laptop/desktop, or tv. This caused me to run the gambit of reviews for the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Keyboard. Best Buy was advertising the Kindle Keyboard 3G (with ads) for , so price wasn’t really a distinguishing feature for me. My thoughts:

Touch:
- Kindle Touch is full-on touchscreen, and based on video reviews, it looked a little laggy
- Kindle Touch will probably drive me nuts with fingerprints/smudges
- Kindle Touch seems like a digress in touchscreen technology (like using a late 90s ATM)
- Kindle Touch doesn’t have physical buttons for page turns, which seemed like it would be a negative
- The doesn’t have 3G, so I’d be limited to Wifi
- Highlighting and note-taking seems like it would be difficult on a laggy screen
- Looking up words will probably be easier

Keyboard:
- Kindle Keyboard has a decent keyboard and physical page turn buttons
- Kindle Keyboard has strong support through reviews (not many people don’t love it)
- The Best Buy sale lets you have free 3G for cheap
- Fingerprints/smudges won’t be an issue

After considering all of this, I went to Best Buy absolutely intending on buying a Kindle Keyboard. I got there, and of course, they had demo models of both. I figured, “What the heck…might as well make sure I like the Keyboard more.”

I played with both for over an hour. I read books, made notes, made highlights, looked up words, went to the menu, back to a book, back to the menu. I went forward through a few pages. I went back through the same pages. I did everything I thought I would normally do while reading. My decision?
- The Kindle Touch touchscreen does have a slight delay, but it’s definitely not a late 90s ATM. It’s a delay, but just long enough for you to demonstrate a slight bit of patience (and to be honest, if you’re an avid reader, patience is probably a virtue you can easily put into practice. There’s a reason you’re reading a book and not watching a movie.)
- Highlighting/note-taking is actually much more convenient on the Touch. Just press where you want to start, wait a second, drag to where you want to stop, and click highlight. Much easier (in my opinion) than moving the cursor down to where you want to start with the d-pad, clicking enter, dragging the cursor to where you want to stop, and then clicking enter again.
- Note-taking is slightly more convenient on the Keyboard simply because you can just start typing (if you’re not overly concerned about the exact line the note is attached to). If you are concerned about the location of your notes, then using the d-pad to move the cursor was not only inconvenient but also uncomfortable (I have pretty big hands, so doing all of this one-handed required me to contort my thumb in a very odd way to use the d-pad).
- I didn’t really like the keyboard on the Keyboard. The buttons are very heavy, so you have to give them a decent push to register a keystroke. Also, the qwerty layout is not a true qwerty layout, so beware of that. I had to be very conscious of the keys I was pushing otherwise I ended up with notes like: “The Kimdle keynoard is very mice.” VERY ANNOYING (especially if you take a ton of notes…which I do).
- The page turn button on the Keyboard was very annoying. The page turn button on the demo model gave two very audible clicks when I pressed it. The clicks were distracting, taking me “out” of the book after every page.
- After thinking about it, the free 3G wasn’t a huge…

General observations:

- Controlling/manipulating things on the screen is so much easier with the touch screen-it’s a lot more intuitive!

- Athough I don’t show it in the video, you can swipe instead of tap to turn pages. You may also use your left hand to page forward by tapping slightly more in from the left edge. It works quite well.

- Looking up a word is as easy as pressing on that word. No more fumbling with a 5-way controller. You can additionally highlight blocks of text quite easily by just swiping over it.

- Kindle Touch also has the new X-Ray feature which is really neat. It can be interesting to see a summary listing of facts from a given book about a person mentioned for instance. The Kindle Keyboard does not include this feature.

Very Nice Laptop, June 5, 2011

I bought this laptop as a family utility machine, it sits in my living room and at least 4 people use it regularly. I was looking for something that was new and had new components, this has a 2nd gen Intel I3 processor along with a USB 3.0 port and bluetooth 3.0. The major pro to this machine is the price along with some new features. The screen display and keyboard are nice as well. It also has a 720P Webcam with facial recognition software and fingerprint reader(it doesn’t always work though). For those that care about noise this thing doesn’t really make any, my previous laptop fan ran a lot.

***Cons***
I took a star off because the machine has lots of crap software on it. It would be nice if you could have the option of just getting it shipped with the OS only. There are also 3 partitions on the hard drive, 1 called HP recovery, 2nd which is FAT32 for HP tools, and a 3rd for everything else. I’m still working on removing crap software, but it still runs fast and boots in 20 – 30 seconds.

***Other***
This is not a gaming laptop so if you want it to play the latest and greatest games look elsewhere. You should be able to play most web games or anything that doesn’t require a dedicated video card.

Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase. I researched for about a month straight and ended up on this one based on highest functionality for the price combined with the newest hardware.

***Update 8/19/2011***
I updated to 5 stars because I am very satisfied with this machine. The processor is really fast and I really like the USB 3.0 backups are super fast. I don’t use the webcam or transport the laptop much so I can’t really comment on that. For the price its an excellent machine.

Review of my laptop, July 18, 2011

We (I and my wife) did our own comparison with other brands and found this to have the best specification and also value for money. It is originally sold for 570-580$ in HP, so getting this at a huge discount from CircuitCity is really great.

Our goal was to find a decent laptop for home use within budget of 400-450$ dollars. We compared HP-Pavilion g6-1b79dx priced at 429.99$ , Toshiba – C655-S5128 at 449.99$ , Toshiba – C655-S5212 at 399.99$ , Dell Inspiron 15R i3-380M at 399$ , Lenovo ideapad z560 at 449.99$ .

For this kind of price, i receive a HD webcam, anti-glare screen, bluetooth and WiFi. Plus i also receive a HDMI port for viewing images/movies on my larger LCD TV. It also comes with Windows 7 (64 bit) which enables the OS to handle large amounts of data (RAM) when compared to 32 bit. The only flaw if i could say so is that it comes with 320 GB Hard drive whereas others might offer you a 500 GB capacity, but who cares! atleast i find the storage capacity enough. Also only HP Probook 4530 XU015UT provides both, bluetooth and WiFi when compared within this price range. (so transfer files from any device to your PC hassle-free)

This is touted as a business laptop in HP website, so you know it means business and not some decorative (read flashy) home laptop. It also comes with a brushed aluminium finish.

This laptop also offers HP enhanced security comes with fingerprint, face detection and other security features which you can enable using HP proprietory software. I found it so good that i ordered 2 of these from Amazon.

We have been using it for about 2 weeks now and thoroughly enjoy watching movies, using WiFi, Skype and other stuff. CircuitCity promptly delivered this to us and i have no reason to complain whatsoever.

Best laptop for this price!, July 11, 2011

This laptops is awesome.

This laptop has the sandy bridge version of the i3 which has really strong integrated graphics card. and very quick processor.

I was actually able to get around 35 FPS on Civilization V on low setting which means I could run smoothly at medium settings, which also means that you can play alot of other games like MW2, Fifa, NFS, Portal, Mirror’s Edge, Red Alert 3, and games at this intensity on low settings. Fifa will surely run on medium settings.

Aside from the specs, The touchpad is a little bit rough at first as if you’re touching very fine sandpaper, but after a while of use you get used to it and realize that it actually works better than glossy touchpads on other laptops.

Also the USB hubs are a little bit hard to get extensions in them, but for me that’s a plus so that the USBs don’t fall off easily.

The screen is really vibrant, although I haven’t tested it in direct sunlight. You will also notice that there is a lot of space beyond the display in the front (a good .5 inch on both sides and like 1.5 inches on the top.)

The speakers are actually really loud and crisp clear.

There is bluetooth built in. And there is two USB 3.0 hubs.

It ways a little bit more than your average 15.6 inch laptop, which I guess is due to the brushed aluminum finish on the back and surrounding the touchpad.

Overall this is the best laptop purchase I have ever made.

Great little mac for the money, March 4, 2012

I am a IT Networking student that is almost finished with my degree. I got a temp job working for the school district and it may turn permanent. I am very good with windows and linux and I am a hardware geek. When I interviewed for the position they asked what experience I had with macs. Almost the entire school system was on macs because they got tired of viruses. I said none, I have only ever met a couple of people that used them and non that needed repairs. I told them I could learn quickly and pickup as I go and they hired me. Not wanting to fumble around on their time I picked up this laptop to get used to how it works and learn about it. I have learned a good bit about macs with it and find im getting my work done quickly because of the practice.
I must warn you if you have ideas about upgrading the hard drive it is difficult. You just about have to completely disassemble the laptop to get it. Like pealing a onion. The memory on my laptop is 1 gig. I have installed several programs including virtualpc for mac and installed several os, like dos, win2000, xp, and win2003. Well win2003 was a little lagy the rest worked very well and share folder setup very quick.
I would sugest getting the os version that just has ppc architecture. If you have the os that has both you are loosing about 10gig. This laptop comes with 40gig so that is 25% of your space.
The battery is very good. I usually get about 4 hrs on it. You would consider this is good by pc standards but consider that when this was new the time was about 6 hrs. There are things you can get like duel battery chargers that charge and maintain two batters so you always have power. Batteries range from -60.
At my school I and others have had a problem with staying connected to the net or even being able to connect.With the mac i have not had one problem with connections. It works very well.
All told the laptop runs very quickly for the amount of memory I have. I am able to carry it around when working on my tasks easily. I also carry it in my backpack to classes. It is very small and although there are some lighter laptops it is a managable weight.

Excellent basic laptop for anyone looking to save money., February 10, 2012

I bought this laptop from Micro Center because I saw it on sale for 9 and needed a new computer. I basically try to keep things until they go bad, my computer previous to this one was like a 1996 Award Tower with a basic Dell Screen. Very slow, with a 6 GB hard drive. It got to the point where it was too slow for me to do my work efficiently and couldn’t even watch 360p videos on Youtube. I always try to save money and try to purchase items that offer the most for the money. This laptop was an excellent choice. I’ve had it for about a month so far and I am so happy with it. The performance is excellent, its not sluggish at all, the keyboard is nice and comfortable, and the HD graphics and LED screen are wonderful. Two minor complaints I have is that I couldn’t connect to my WiFi and had no idea why it kept disconnecting. I had to uninstall the Norton virus protection that came with the computer and then the internet is working fine. It kept blocking it and driving me crazy, so now that it is gone everything is perfect. The speakers aren’t too great either. I work from home and have a two screen setup and wish the audio was just a little bit louder because I sometimes watch videos or the news. I would opt for this model because it is the Intel processor and you can’t go wrong with it. The screen is 15.6 HD LED LCD and is a great size. I use it more as a desktop computer so its just fine for me, someone who takes their computer on the go a lot more might want something a bit smaller in size. The hard drive is 282 GB which is huge and coming from a 6 GB HD…yes 6 where I literally had to delete photos after uploading them to conserve space. The drive is more then enough. The battery life is roughly 4 hours, and when you have the screen dim it lasts a bit longer. I typically have the screen dim after a few minutes and sleep after 15 minute to extend the life. I have no problem watching Youtube videos in 1080p and the quality is fantastic. I have also purchased a TV show in HD from Amazon and streamed it and the quality is excellent. Even with the computer being a lot more expensive on amazon it is still a great computer to consider. I also love the HDMI input on the side where I have hooked the laptop up to my 47″ Vizio TV and it looked perfect. My girlfriend has a Macbook Pro which is almost ,000 more and I just can’t see the point. She doesn’t even have an HDMI port and it has a smaller screen and I can’t justify why someone would pay so much more. If you want a laptop that is fast, perfect for everyday use with all the bells and whistles that come standard…this is an excellent choice. There was no reviews for me to read prior to purchasing which made me nervous but I still took the leap, hopefully this will help people who are considering.

Like Jared, I also picked this up at Micro Center. In my case, for only 9! As someone who remembers working on IBM XT personal computers, it is astounding to consider the power and performance that can now be had for a pittance.

I am an Apple user, but so far I have been reasonably well impressed with Windows 7. I downloaded Open Office (I absolutely detest the Microsoft “ribbon” interface) which runs great, and the machine streams movies well. BTW, apparently it is running a 64 bit version of Windows.

I did install 4 megs of additional memory at the suggestion of the sales guy – it cost about – so I cannot swear the streaming would be quite as good with only 2 meg. I can also attest to the fact that you do indeed have to remove 20-something screws and take off the back of the case to install ram. Though the whole process still only took about 20 minutes.

The keyboard is a little weird, in that the keys are sort of like large Chiclets that kind of float over the body of the machine, which tells me it could get messy for users who eat while using their computers. This is the only weak spot I have noticed. It is also true that you have to burn your own recovery disks for Windows, but given the price, I can’t beef about that.

Overall, a very good machine for the price.

Nice Budget Notebook – EASY MEMORY UPGRADE, February 28, 2012

This is a pretty nice notebook. The wide screen is crisp and clear. Default resolution of 1366 x 768 is quite acceptable. I paid 280 and bought a 4 GB memory module for 18 bucks. If you are upgrading the memory remove ALL the screws on the bottom of the notebook. Don’t forget the 4 screws inside the battery compartment, and keep them separate from the others as they are smaller. All the other screws are the same size. Once all the screws are removed the back should come off. There are no ribbon cables to worry about. You just set the notebook upside down on a cloth on a table, remove all screws and pull the back plastic off. My fingernails are short and I was still able to gently pry the back off without a tool. If the DVD door cover comes off don’t panic, just snap it back into place. Insert memory in the blank slot and screw it back together. remove the entire Presto, you have 6 GB memory. This is a snappy little notebook for under 300 clams. My Scores are Processor 5.3, RAM 5.5, Graphics 4.3, Gaming Graphics 5.7, Hard Disk 5.9.
